Tetra Pak has inked a deal with Braskem to try use of renewable HDPE for manufacture of plastic caps and closures. Under the terms of agreement, Braskem will supply Tetra Pak with 5000 tpa of the ethanol-based HDPE from 2011. Though this HDPE will represent barely 5% of Tetra Pak's total HDPE demand, Tetra Pak hopes green plastics will eventually become commercially viable. 

Tetrapack is trying to devise a method that will make green polymers work across its’ supply chain. The current high price of biopolymers makes the switch to green plastics commercially difficult. Braskem plans to open the world's first commercial-scale 'green' polyethylene plant in late 2010 and aims to deliver its first batches to Tetra Pak in early 2011.
